What is iRest Yoga Nidra?

There’s normal meditation… and then there’s iRest Yoga Nidra!

If you’ve never tried, or even heard of Integrative Restoration or ‘iRest’, this is an incredible, transformative practice of deep relaxation and meditative inquiry.

‘Yoga Nidra’ is a Sanskrit term which roughly translates as ‘integrated sleep’ – but in this sense, it’s a more ‘conscious’ sleep, giving you the means to relax deeply, increase your resilience, improve your interpersonal relationships and gain greater skills for life-mastery.

iRest helps you to release negative emotions and thought patterns, it calms the nervous system, and it help you to develop greater capacity to meet any circumstances you may encounter through life.

Developed over 25 years ago specifically for a Western audience, iRest is much more accessible than some of the more esoteric forms of meditation. It’s steadily becoming more and more popular and widespread, being used in environments as diverse as schools, hospitals, military environments, rehab clinics, and within studios like mine.

 

Who can do iRest Yoga Nidra?

iRest is a fantastic tool for absolutely everyone – from yoga students to those in the corporate world. We’re often stressed and burnt out, and this is something that can be done anywhere and by anyone, without the need for special clothing or equipment.

 

iRest Yoga Nidra benefits

iRest nourishes qualities such as joy, peacefulness, empathy, forgiveness, patience and loving kindness towards yourself and others.

It also supports people to resolve all kinds of emotional issues – whether it’s stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression, trauma or chemical dependence.

What can I expect from a class?

iRest programs are usually taught as a guided meditation, with students either lying down or sitting comfortably during the practice.
I offer two types of classes to train students in iRest techniques:
Casual classes
These classes run as 60-minute introductory iRest Yoga Nidra sessions, to give people an idea of what iRest is all about. We’ll cover various themes during these classes, from Progressive Relaxation, to Inner Resource, Body-Sensing and Breath-Sensing.
These classes consist of a 10-15 minute introduction to the theme of the day, followed by 45-50 minutes of deep guided relaxation, which can be done either sitting or lying down.
The classes are a great introduction to the complete 8-week courses I offer to students wanting to deepen their practice and further enhance their experience.
8-week courses
On these in-depth 8-week programs, I’ll take you through the complete iRest Process, with a professional, well-structured program designed to give you the in-depth skills to make the most of of this powerful technique for self-mastery.
I’ll guide you through areas like body-sensing and breath-sensing, to more subtle layers of feelings and emotions, showing you how to feel them in the body, and encouraging you to observe, explore and work through any self-limiting beliefs, so you can connect more readily with your innate self, to feel more joy, peace and connectedness.
Each class has its own theme, which will be covered in the opening 10-15 minutes. We’ll then allow 40-45 minutes for the meditation itself, and an extra 5 minutes at the end to help integrate your experience.
You’ll also receive a comprehensive iRest workbook, which is full of useful information on the course structure and the many benefits of the process. This enables you to prepare for each session and get much more out of the course – and the book is yours to keep after the course finishes, so you’ll always have a resource to refer back to.

 

My experience of iRest

I’ve had some amazing experiences with iRest – and I love it because it is very grounding, creating powerful awareness of what’s going on in the body.

Plus it takes my students and clients to a completely new level of relaxation and meditation.

It’s my goal to bring more joy, peace, awareness and connection to the lives of my students – so I aim to introduce iRest wherever it’s needed… from yoga classes to rehab clinics, business environments, hospitals and more.
